Mayor & Commissioners

 

The City of Nebraska City is operated by a five-member City Council. Our City Council is unique in the State of Nebraska in that it is a Commission form of government. The specific statutes governing the Commission form of government in the State of Nebraska are found in §§ 19-401 to 19-434 of the Nebraska Revised Statutes. The authority to have the individual five members of the Commission form of government are found in §§ 16-312 – 16-316 and §§ 19-415. The following is a brief synopsis of the roles of each Commissioner.

Mayor – Commissioner of Public Affairs and Public Safety: Bryan Bequette

  • The Mayor presides at all City Council meetings with the right to vote and veto.  The Mayor acts as the representative of the City for ceremonial activities, business with other communities and State, and negotiations with other entities as needed. The Mayor oversees the activities of the Police Department, Fire Department, EMS and Rescue Department, and the Library.

Commissioner of the Department of Public Accounts and Finances: Cole Sharp

  • The Finance Commissioner oversees the City’s financial documents such as claims, treasurer’s report, annual audit and more. The Finance Commissioner serves as the vice-president of the City Council and in the absence of the Mayor will preside over the City Council meeting.  The Finance Commissioner oversees the activities of the City Clerk-Treasurer’s Department.

Commissioner of the Department of Parks and Recreation: Patrick Wehling

  • The Parks Commissioner oversees the City’s recreational facilities including the Aquatic Center, Parks Department, Recreation Department, and Golf Department.

Commissioner of the Department of Public Works:  Ron Osovski

  • The Public Works Commissioner oversees the City’s Utilities including the Electric Department, Gas Department, Water Department and Sanitary Sewer Department. The Public Works Commissioner works directly with the Board of Public Works to accomplish this.

Commissioner of the Department of Streets, Public Improvements and Public Property: Joe Chaney

  • The Street Commissioner oversees the City’s Street Department, Cemetery Department, Public Properties, and Wildwood Period House. The Street Commissioner is also responsible for declaring snow emergencies.
