NEBRASKA CITY -  GoodLife Agriculture announced a groundbreaking for its Nebraska City fish processing facility by the end of the year or early January.

John Humphrey, vice president of projects for GoodLife Agriculture, told city commissioners Monday that the final design of the 300,000-square-foot facility is complete and is now out to bid with contractors.

Construction of the $280 million plant is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

Humphrey also updated commissioners on supply chain destinations for fresh fish.

Humphrey: “We’ve also secured Costco now as our main, anchor customer.”

Costco is a multi-national corporation with membership-only warehouse club retail stores in Omaha and Lincoln.

GoodLife Agriculture is expected to begin repaying portions of $1 million in Nebraska City Growth Fund loans on March 1.

The Nebraska City Planning Commission approved a conditional use permit for the fish processing plant at 2200 23rd Ave.

The conditions include wellhead protection and odor control. The odor control plan features a cold-chain requirement.
Raw materials are to be kept below 35.6 degrees from receiving to packing. The cold chain is not to be broken except for a frying process on the breaded-product line.

No waste water lagoon is allowed, but city planners allowed covered biological treatment. The company says the facility will be odor neutral at the property line.

Stormwater management will be onsite.

Humphrey said the projected staffing is in the range of 75 to 100 people.
