Streets
Some common issues the Street Department can address:
- Alleys needing more gravel
- Removal of fallen branches in the middle of the road
- Potholes
- Removal of deceased wildlife on road
- Snow removal from city streets
Some common issues the Property Owner is responsible for:
- Overhanging branches/vegetation in the alley
The street department may add more gravel if needed to fill ruts. All other issues are the property owner's responsibility. Property owners are in charge of trimming vegetation/removing tree branches, and maintaining visibility and access to the alley for all neighbors. For tree branches interfering with utility poles, please call Nebraska City Utilities at (402) 873-3353.
- Cutting of trees or branches on private property
Owners are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of trees on their property. Every owner of any tree overhanging any street or right-of-way within the city shall prune the branches so that such branches shall not obstruct the light from any street lamp or obstruct the view of any street intersection and so that there shall be a clear space of eight (8) feet above the surface of the street or sidewalk. Said owners shall remove all dead, diseased or dangerous trees, or broken or decayed limbs which constitute a menace to the public safety. The city shall have the right to prune any tree or shrub on private property when it interferes with the proper spread of light along the street from a street light, or interferes with visibility of any traffic control device or sign. (Ord. No. 1547-76, § 8, 8-2-76)
Neighbor Issues
Having an issue with a neighbor? Start with a friendly conversation. Many neighborhood concerns can be resolved by simply discussing the issue and working together toward a solution.
If tree branches or other vegetation from a neighboring property extend onto your property, you may trim or cut them back to your property line. However, it is always best to talk with your neighbor first and bring the issue to their attention. This can help resolve the immediate concern and prevent the same issue from happening again.
Good communication with your neighbors can go a long way toward keeping our neighborhoods safe, healthy, and enjoyable for everyone.
